Mornin/evenin fella's
Let me know whatcha think of the song and recording. Particularly keen to know how well you think the vocals sit in the mix, usual pain in the arse blah blah....
Its called 'The greatest conversation' and can be got here:

Feb 25, 2006 10:38 am Enjoyed this song.. Vocals sound pretty clear to me and the vocalist does a fine job. I don't understand why it's listed as "alternative". Doesn't sound alternative to me. Lead parts could be more interesting and the drums sound a little bland to me. Still, I like the song and enjoyed the listen!

Feb 25, 2006 05:02 pm Thanks Dung beetle
I dunno what alternative implies these days. Alternative club nights for me meant anything from NIN to the smiths and REM.
Glad you liked my vocal, as always it was the hardest part to make sit in the mix. I've always compressed at the mic pre stage and then used a limiter effect on the recorder. This was done with just the recorders limiter and then a touch of eq.....
I know what you mean about the lead parts (that run throughout), but they're just for texture rather than trying to stand out. I may re-do the second passage (solo type thing) that is repeated near the end.
As for the drums, it's true, i'm no drummer. Just get by with my Dr rhythm 550. I've always found the toms pretty artificial on there so i try to avoid and stick with the basics.
Cheers, Mac
Feb 25, 2006 06:41 pm I see... I think that's the weak link in your recording... the drums. Still enjoyed it!

Feb 27, 2006 06:43 pm Hey mac, I enjoyed it as well. Nice vox for sure, they sit well with the guitars. I am with DungBeatle as well on the drum thing. You might try importing the drums as seperate pieces, or at least import the toms to a seperat track a work them over with some compression and EQ to get them to sound good. I know what you mean about the DR 550 though, they are kinda generic sounding, but they can be made to sound a little better if you work them over.
Otherwise, that is another good tune you have there for sure.

Feb 28, 2006 05:03 am Thanks for the comments and advice Noize
I'm gonna give the toms a go on their own track at some point, see what difference it can make.

Feb 28, 2006 08:21 am Mac74,
Listening on laptop speakers right now, so maybe I shouldn't comment on the soundscape of your piece. Nevertheless, I think it sounds great! I think that the drums fit the piece quite nicely for the genre of music.
Very infectious little pop song, and I like it very much!

Thanks for your posts and kind words.
I'm pretty close to finishing my demo 'album' and the songs earmarked for a place on that. I probably won't get round to tidying up its loose ends, too busy finishing off other songs so i can enjoy not recording for a bit this summer.....
All the best , mac

Mar 02, 2006 11:06 pm Good midtempo rock man. I like this a lot, good songwriting and melody.
Drums could definitely come up a bit, and like Noize said if you try to get each drum on its own track, you can really start to pan and affect each one differently.
Compression and EQ will be very helpful in making sampled toms sound better. You can EQ out the resonant frequency on them so they don't sound so "boingy".
Good song, glad you posted it! You listen to Stephen Malkmus at all? This kind of reminds me of a song off of Face the Truth.

Yeah Tadpui, i'm a big pavement/ Malkmus fan, although not got much of his solo stuff.
ha, boingy is definately the word for those toms....
