I know this topic has been covered before, but bear with me here.

What is the most direct way to program midi drums into Sonar 4, assuming I will be using a keyboard controller. Can I trigger .wav files of realistic drum sounds with the keyboard while tracking it in Sonar, or do I need additional software (Fruity Loops, etc.)?

Depending on your version of S4 if it is the Studio or the Producer edition. You should have a drum synth/sampler called Velocity. That will allow you to drop in your own wav files for drum samples and play them the way you described.
