Latency - again!

Finally took the plunge and invested in Mackie's Spike uSB soundcard. Already experienced a few problems with it benig recognised by my Toshiba laptop, but that is another issue.....!

I was dissapointed to find that I still have a latency problem. its hard to get much below 20ms without the signal breaking down etc. How much influence does the amount of RAM make? I have a 2.8ghz processor but only 256mb RAM.

MAYBE, if you threw a gig of RAM at it, it might behave, but that particular interface is a USB 1.1 device, so I'm not sure if even that would help y'a . Hopefully someone will jump on this and be able to lend some real advice, but my advice is to take it back to the place you got it from, and find something USB 2.0, or firewire . Sorry, I hope I'm wrong here .

I've made this mistake quite a few times myself... whenever technologies start making strides in audio, it's always a painful trade-off between the familiar, but archaic past and the hope-filled, but unknown future .

I think I will return it, but can anyone tell me who makes a USB 2.0 compliant interface?

Line 6 has got some nice 2.0 USB interfaces .

Is the USB in your computer 2.0 ? If not there's ways to make that happen cheaply .

Do you mean the Toneport audio interface? I've considered this as an alternative.

Yeah, that's one of 'em... there are other's out there as well . Do some research... read some articles, and some reviews .

Yep, jools, the OntePort UX-1 or UX-2 form Line 6 is great. Have a look here www.homerecordingconnecti...tory&id=727 as dB and I just reviewed them both.

Your choice of which one would be dependant on exactly what you need. But have alook a those. As for me, less then 3mx latency running the buffer at 256. But that is also running on an AMD 3200 with 2 gig of ram.

but I do suggest a bit more ram to help with that a bit.
