hi,
very new to this but am looking to record on my compaq presario 2500 laptop and obviously need to get a soundcard, mike etc. I've spoken to a few people in stores and have been recommended the edirol ua25 and se electronics se2200a mike. I'm expecting to be recording acoustic/electric guitar, vocals and various other bits. I was looking at an edirol pcr1 keyboard, which i think would enable me to use vst instruments too, what should i do??
please advise!

Feb 21, 2006 02:05 pm That device could work. For less money and possibly more versatility you may want to at least look at the Line 6 TonePort that we just reviewed www.homerecordingconnecti...tory&id=727 it's a USB powered device and is actually very impressive. But your need for that is totally dependent on what other gear you have (hint, hint, fill out your profile).
You can use VSTi's without a controller if you don't mind step time sequencing, you only need a control like the PCR1 if you want to play and record in real time.

In reply to yur question about other gear, i only have my laptop and my guitars. I'm looking to start with the minimum possible, basically. I imagine that as time goes on andi spend some time messing around i'll have a better idea about extras that might be useful, but as things stand at the moment i just want to get started. I've messed about on cubase so was thinking about getting that too.
Thanks for comments re: pcr1, maybe i can think about a midi controller in the future. Also, sorry for being dumb, but is that line 6 toneport a soundcard and software?
cheers

Feb 21, 2006 10:48 pm It is indeed a soundcard and software. The software part is the guitar amp sims as well as pre-amps sims, bass amp sims and lots of effects.
As for the recording software, I believe the ua25 comes with some light version of recording software.
As well the Line 6 TonePort comes with Ableton Live, which is very good to start with as well to get your feet wet.
