RCA adapter for computer sound

Hi

Well I managed to get my new kit hooked up on Friday and record my first sound on the computer.

I had a little trouble with the audiophile 2496 drivers. I was hoping to be able to switch between the audio drivers for the 2496 and the on board realtek drivers. But it seems that now I have the 2496 installed Windoze won't let me switch back using the volume control properties.

So the point is I don't want to run the computer sound through the mixer for normal use (daughter playing games, watching DVDs) so can I use an adapter on the RCA female outputs to split the two into four and then run a lead off to my hi-fi amplifier or use another adapter to run the sound to my computer speakers.

Specifically I've only found an RCA male to 2 X RCA female. Could I use two of thes to end up with four outs. Will this introduce extra noise when recording or just not work?

I just don't want to spend the rest of my life crawling around plugging and unplugging cables at the back of the PC.

Why not just run everything thru your audiophile, kids games and all? Is there a reason you don't want to do that? Then you can just disable that RealTek thing.

I don't think that the volume control properties will let you switch between sound drivers anyways.

Go to Control Panel->Sounds and Audio Devices... and click on the "Audio" tab. For the playback device, you should have a choice between the RealTek and the Audiophile. Can you just select the RealTek there?

Then in your recording app you should be able to specify the Audiophile as the input and output as far as that particular app is concerned.

So either you can switch the default playback device to the Audiophile anytime you are doing a tracking session, or you should be able to specify the Audiophile as your recording and playback device in your multitrack app and leave the default Windows settings alone.

Thanks for the replies

dbMasters, yep I want to use the Audiophile for everything but don't want to be swapping cables around so was wondering if it would be ok to use the adapters described to turn the pair of outs from the card into two pairs of outs.

Tadpui, as I said I had some trouble installing the drivers but tried your method of swapping last night and it worked thanks.

I would still like to ditch the Realtek though.

I'm using N-track at the moment and when I go into View soundcard settings and look at recording I get an error saying I need to install a recording device. However I have recorded using the 2496 and n-track so I'm not sure what's going on there.

You should be able to put a splitter on each of the outputs, turning each output into two. I don't see a problem there, just hit up your local Radio Shack or other electronic supply store and look for the right "Y" cable to do it.

OK thanks for that.
