Well.....
It all depends on what you like.

When recording distorted guitars, they are usually already compressed enough not to have to compress them after the mic. So, unless you're trying to get a certain sound from it, the compressor is not necessary.
I'd recommend going through the mixer, because of the mic preamps. But if you choose to use the NT1 or almost ANY large diaphram condenser, you'll HAVE to go through the mixer for phantom power.
Its a toss-up on which mic to use. Some folks'll say that the 57 is the only way to go. Personally, I prefer to use my MXL 990 condenser. Its all about your personal taste.
In the end, you'll have to just experiment and see what's right for you.

cheers dude, that has helped :)
going into mixer did sound better and i did have a go without the compressor,i see what you mean.

what is the best way to polish off the guitar sound when it's been recorded on to a track.

i am getting the metallica sound (ride the lightning, master of puppets)
i have main gtr left & right and thinking of using another gtr behind them low in the mix,but sounds too in your face.
etc etc

what other effects or procedure would be best to make it sound nice and polished.

i have waves plugins, timeworks plugins, vst plugins, maximisers , amplitude etc etc.

cheers mate and thanks for your time in helping me get there.

You have a Marshall and a 57???

Match made in heaven I thinks...sorted!

I'd MIC er up using the 57, a little back from the grille and (as a wee test) fire the condenser, a good bit back to pick up some room noise and have best of both worlds???

You may want to think about recording some clean, uneffected tracks too and using Amplitube to test amps/settings and then, EQ and pan to L R thus givng 2 nice different tracks, with as many tests and config changes as ye like....

Alternatively, record 2 different parts (A FAR better idea) then do the same i.e. pan L R and amplitube em...I use that tae...a class wee plug for sure!

All th best

Coco.
