computer recording problem

hi ,please can someone help.right here goes.i am trying to record from my stereo to a pc,with the phono jacks connected from stereo unit to the mic in .at the front of my computer,but it is not swiching the mic off and will not record the signals from my stereo,i have tried setting up the realtic audio manager but i cant get any joy,i now am at my wits end.please help thanks
